Cloud, on-premise and hybrid hotel television are delivery models, not quality labels. A cloud platform can be the simplest and most economical choice for a small hotel. A local appliance can be the strongest design for a large resort with satellite sources. A multi-property group may need both under one management layer.
The correct decision depends on five inputs: rooms, televisions, network, channel sources and operating model. The wrong decision usually begins when a buyer compares only the first-year software price.
The three models
Cloud IPTV
The control plane and media services are hosted centrally. Rooms use validated hospitality-TV applications or preconfigured STBs and receive authorised content over the network.
Strong when: the hotel has reliable internet, wants fast deployment, has limited local IT and values automatic updates and multi-property control.
Watch: internet capacity, recurring subscription, cloud dependency, content egress and supported television lifecycle.
On-premise IPTV
A local server or appliance runs middleware and media processing, often with satellite, terrestrial, cable or IP receivers.
Strong when: the hotel has local channel sources, needs operation during WAN interruption, has a large room count or requires a specific local integration model.
Watch: hardware lifecycle, spares, tuner/CAM configuration, backups, local environment and responsibility after the first support year.
Hybrid IPTV
The property receives selected content locally while central services manage interface, rights, applications, analytics or additional IP channels.
Strong when: local and international content need different delivery, the group has mixed network maturity, or resilience is more important than architectural purity.
Watch: operational clarity. Hybrid becomes confusing if nobody knows which component owns channel health, identity and failover.
Compare five-year total cost
Include:
- 1software subscription or perpetual licence;
- 2room licences and content licences;
- 3server, receiver cards, CAMs and smart cards;
- 4STBs where direct-TV deployment is unavailable;
- 5installation, rack, network and commissioning;
- 6PMS or third-party interface cost;
- 7support, maintenance and software updates;
- 8internet circuit and incremental media capacity;
- 9hardware replacement and spares;
- 10staff time for operation and vendor coordination.
A low-cost local licence can become expensive if the hotel must maintain receivers and specialist knowledge. A cloud subscription can become expensive at very large scale if priced without volume terms. Model the actual property.

Television choice changes the economics
Validated LG, Samsung or Philips hospitality televisions may run the hotel application directly, removing a set-top box from every room. Consumer or unsupported models may need a preconfigured STB. Direct-TV deployment reduces visible hardware, but the exact model and firmware must be certified before the purchase order.
If televisions have not been bought, select the TV and IPTV architecture together. Saving a small amount on an unsupported screen can create a box, extra power supply and another lifecycle in every room.

Channel sources change the answer
A hotel requiring local DVB-T channels and several encrypted satellite transponders needs receiver design, CAM capacity and broadcaster smart cards. A boutique property using licensed IP feeds does not.
Ask for a channel and source schedule before final pricing:
- 1channel and language;
- 2satellite position, terrestrial multiplex or IP contribution;
- 3encrypted or free-to-air status;
- 4CAM and smart-card requirement;
- 5territory and hospitality licence;
- 6HD or UHD profile;
- 7local resilience requirement.
The server quotation should state receiver capacity and exclusions. "Supports satellite" is not an engineering design.
Who owns each failure?
Write a responsibility matrix for:
- 1broadcaster source unavailable;
- 2hotel internet failure;
- 3local receiver or CAM failure;
- 4television application crash;
- 5PMS integration delayed;
- 6room device offline;
- 7CDN or origin problem;
- 8incorrect channel entitlement;
- 9hotel network packet loss.
Define monitoring and first response. A solution with fewer components is not automatically easier if the hotel has no visibility into them.
Security and update model
Cloud services can distribute fixes centrally, while local systems give the hotel more physical control. Neither is secure by default. Require property isolation, role-based access, audit logs, secret management, endpoint lifecycle, network segmentation and a vulnerability process in every model.
The 2026 European Accommodation Barometer found a large cybersecurity-readiness gap between the biggest accommodation businesses and teams with fewer than ten staff. Simplicity is therefore a security feature for small hotels: defaults, updates and support must work without an enterprise security department.
A practical recommendation by property type
- 110–60 room independent hotel: begin with cloud and direct-TV or preconfigured STB unless local sources dictate otherwise.
- 260–250 room city hotel: compare cloud and hybrid using measured concurrency, television model and PMS scope.
- 3large resort or campus: evaluate on-premise or hybrid for local reception and WAN resilience, with central management.
- 4multi-property group: standardise the management layer but allow property-specific delivery.
- 5new build: select network, TVs, PMS and content architecture together before tender lock-in.
