Hotel TV Channel Lineup by Guest Mix: A Rights-Aware Planning Method

📋 Quick Summary

Start with local essentials, add international news, map the top guest languages to a small number of proven channels, enforce territory rights and review actual selection by property and season.

A hotel channel package should reflect where the property operates and who stays there. A national channel is usually most valuable in its home market, while international news and selected language services travel more widely. More channels do not automatically produce a better guest experience.

💡
TL;DR. Start with local essentials, add international news, map the top guest languages to a small number of proven channels, enforce territory rights and review actual selection by property and season.

Build four layers

Local core: principal national channels, public information and local-language news.

International core: a controlled set of recognised news and general-interest services for multinational guests.

Guest-mix layer: channels for the property's principal foreign markets, based on stays rather than assumptions.

Property layer: sport, business, family, lifestyle or regional content justified by the hotel type.

Eurostat notes that international guest nights should be analysed by country of residence and period. A city hotel may change substantially during a trade fair, while a resort follows seasonal source markets. Use monthly PMS aggregates with privacy safeguards.

Rights before signal

Receiving a free-to-air signal does not automatically grant public communication in hotel rooms. European court decisions have repeatedly treated hotel distribution as a communication to the public in relevant circumstances. Verify hospitality rights, territory, term, rooms, reporting, protection and price.

Price by registered rooms

If a hotel registers 100 rooms, a property-wide channel licence normally covers the registered room base, not an estimated number of occupied screens. Make this explicit before quoting.

Use the marketplace model

Let hotels select authorised channels instead of forcing one large package. Country controls should hide channels where rights are unavailable and show the correct local price. Content providers gain reporting on property, market and viewing without exposing unrelated customer data.

Review with evidence

Measure selection, startup success and viewing duration by property and territory. Remove persistently unused paid channels unless they serve a strategic or contractual purpose. Do not compare countries without considering availability and guest mix.

COTT.TV content control

COTT.TV provides television content only to hotels using the COTT.TV platform. Channels are protected, authorised by country and selected by each hotel through the TV Marketplace. The platform does not sell standalone streams outside its customer environment.
